The advancing of participation is an important objective both in Finland and more widely in Europe. The aim of advancing participation is to reduce poverty, exclusion and inequality. The purpose of this research was to study the experiences the clients of adult social work have of their participation in the process of social work. The experiences of the adult social work clients is an interesting area of study because the service is rarely used completely free willingly. The aim of this research was to study how preconditions, obstacles and possibilities of participation are shown in the experiences of the clients. The research question is, how the client of adult social work experiences his / her participation in the process of social work. The data was collected by interviewing four clients of adult social work who live in Helsinki. The interviews were implemented as half structured theme interviews. The research data was analyzed using data-driven content analysis. In addition, also means of the discourse analysis were used. All of the interviewees were willing to meet with the social worker and they contacted the social worker by choice. They expected the social worker to help with practical issues and financial support. An important aim of all the interviewees was to become self-sufficient. Also, all of them underlined the meaning of the relationship and interaction with the social worker. As a summary it can be stated that the interviewees were not fully aware of the services of adult social work, and according to their experiences working with the social worker wasn’t particularly planned and change-oriented. As a conclusion it can be stated that it would be good to pay more attention to advertising services, as well as developing the content of adult social work and clarifying the work done by a social worker in adult social work.
