The aim of this thesis was to investigate how kindergarten teachers experience daycare start. Within the Swedish speaking daycare in Helsinki, the work is based on the "With the eyes of children" approach. This working model addresses following questions; how do kindergarten teachers perceive home visits, how do they experience the soft landing period in daycare and what thoughts do they have about the self-care model. The theoretical part focus on theories associated with the self-care model, previous research and hence emphasize national governing documents. A qualitative research method was used in this study and data was collected by using a semi-structured interview. Three kindergarten teachers participated in the study and the interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed. The results reveals that kindergarten teachers perceive the self-care model as one of the most important tools in the field. Home visits are seen as an important trust building link between families and teachers and therefore are home visits perceived to deepen the relationship between the teacher, parent and child. Soft landing as a method creates a safe foundation for a child to start daycare as the child and teacher already have a connection with each other. Some improvement suggestions concerning the soft landing method are addressed. One improvement suggestion could be to clarify parents’ participation in the self-care model. Additionally was pointed out, that a self-caregiver at the daycare start, is quite tied up and that the self-care model does not always work out in the best possible way. This means that as a self-caregiver you have to be flexible and be able to adapt the self-care model in a neat way.

This study aims to investigate the perceptions of pre-school teachers regarding multicultural education in pre-schools. Multicultural education is a topical issue in Finland because of the immigration to the country. This is a qualitative study and the method for data collection is interviews. By interviewing three pre-school teachers, I have gained insight into the perceptions of pre-school teachers regarding what multiculturalism is, what kind of challenges there are in multicultural education in pre-schools, and how pre-school teachers work with multicultural education. These interviews also shed light on the current state of multicultural education in Finland. However, as this study is conducted with only three interviewees, the conclusions regarding the perceptions of the pre-school teachers about multicultural education are somewhat limited. The results of this study indicate that most pre-school teachers perceive multicultural education in pre-schools as a continuous and natural presence in the interaction with children. Moreover, there is, at least to some extent, planned multicultural education in all pre-school groups. There are challenges in multicultural education, some of which emerge intermittently while others are present on a daily basis. Most of the pre-school teachers perceived multiculturalism as a situation. The pre-school teachers perceived that in multicultural education means paying attention to, accepting and respecting differing cultures, traditions and habits.

The purpose of this study is to find out the factors that have influence on wellbeing of kindergarten teachers. When the new curriculum of early childhood education was adopted, the demands on kindergarten teachers increased. There are only a few earlier studies about the wellbeing of kindergarten teachers. The main questions of this study are: 1. Which factors have impact on wellbeing of kindergarten teachers? 2. How does the wellbeing of kindergarten teachers affect educational activity? 3. Which changes may increase the wellbeing of kindergarten teachers? The study uses phenomenography as research approach. Ten kindergarten teachers from five kindergartens in the capital area were interviewed. The results of the study show that the colleagues, the job assignment and the supervisor are important to wellbeing. There’s also a relationship between wellbeing of kindergarten teachers and educational activity. If you feel uncomfortable, you can’t develop and vary the activities. Good communication, more time and continuity in the job team would increase the wellbeing.

HELSINGIN YLIOPISTO – HELSINGFORS UNIVERSITET – UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI Tiedekunta – Fakultet – Faculty Laitos – Institution – Department Department of child-centered pedagogy Tekijä – Författare – Author Johanna Dumell-Forsskåhl Työn nimi – Arbetets titel – Title Creativity and creative activities in the day care environment - A study of how creativity and creative activities are experienced by kindergarten teachers in the day care environment Oppiaine – Läroämne – Subject Educational program of kindergarten teacher Työn ohjaaja(t) – Arbetets handledare – Supervisor Jan-Erik Mansikka Vuosi – År – Year 2017 Tiivistelmä – Abstrakt – Abstract The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how the kindergarten teachers experience creativity and creative activities in a day care environment. The focus is on how they define creativity and creative activities and if they think that the children learn by being creative. The theory of the study aims to give an understanding of what creativity and creative activities can be in the day care environment and what the conditions are for the day care activities. The qualitative study was done by interview technique on two groups. One, a group of three kindergarten teachers from a private kindergarten and the other, an interview with two kindergarten teachers from a municipal kindergarten. Both kindergartens located in Swedish-Finland. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. Meaning concentration was used as analyzing method. The results suggest that creativity and creative activities are perceived similarly in both the private and the municipal kindergarten and are supported by literature where creativity is considered inventive and imaginative. The day care environment was perceived as a creative environment that supports creative activities. The day cares’ outdoor environment was also considered to be of great value in terms of greater space for the children to be creative more freely. The kindergarten teachers used various methods to stimulate the children to creativity. The answers from the interviews also showed that the attitude of the kindergarten teachers towards the creative activities has a significant impact on how the activity is expressed in the day care environment

The purpose of this study is to search for people´s describing thoughts and furthermore positive and negative attitudes to the value and status of preschool teachers in the Finnish society, to explain a possible disharmony between these two. The theoretical frame of this study clarifies the concept of professionalism and its meaning in relation to the occupation of preschool teacher. It furthermore clarifies the concept of attitudes and its components, its origin and its ability to change. Furthermore, this study is a qualitative study and its approach is phenomenological, based on semi-structured interviews. Four people, regardless of earlier experience of children, are interviewed in Helsinki with the aim to seize the phenomenon, their positive, negative or indifferent attitudes towards preschool teachers in respect of their value verses their status in the Finnish society. Finally the result shows that positive, affective attitudes seem to be connected with children and positive, cognitive attitudes tend to be connected with their childhood witch creates a link to why preschool teachers has such high value in the society. According to this study, lack of knowledge and stereotypic point of views, lowers their status and therefor a disharmony is created between the preschool teacher´s value and status. Furthermore, in order to make a change, knowledge and visibility of the meaning of the profession as a preschool teacher within young children’s education is needed in purpose to bring their value and status to the same level.

The purpose of this study is to examine the view that kindergarten teachers have on the planned exercise activities for children in day-care. The research will thus not include spon-taneous movement and activities that might occur, for instance outside during play, but in-stead the scheduled activities. I aim to find out what kindergarten teachers think of the planned activities, and how well-planned the activities are. I am also curious to find out what impact the teachers backgrounds and experiences might have on the activities and what dif-ference they make. The method used in this study was qualitative interviews. Three kindergarten teachers from a smaller municipality were interviewed, and these interviews were recorded with a mobile phone. Later the interviews were transcribed and analysed. The results I got of this study were that all three of the kindergarten teachers were positively inclined to plan exercise activities with children, as they see them as an important aspect of the children’s development. In all three places the activities were planned, taking the envi-ronment into consideration. Thus the kindergarten with a useful environment around them, such as forests, could utilise these environments more than the kindergarten located in an environment that was not as useful.
