The meaning of this research is to understand children’s thinking of music. The main problems in this research are how children understands music and the quality of children’s thinking. Based on earlier research, I presume that it is difficult for children to understand music as a concept, because it is abstract. The theoretical frame is divided in three different areas: music in the field of philosophy and psychology, children's musical development and musical environments and development of children’s thinking. Subject to this research becomes from my own interest in child-perspective studies, music and developing the state of music education. The main aim is to receive information from the children understanding the concept of music. This can bring important information about children's thinking among educators and help to develop teaching methods for small children’s music education better. This research was accomplished in child perspective and qualitative principles. The data to this research was collected by interviewing 11 3–6-year old children. Interviews were different from each other and they were accomplished with one or two children at a time. the form of the interviews was semi-structured theme-interview. Before the actual interviews there was made one pilot interview that helped to prepare for the actual interviews. The data received from the meetings with the children was analysed theory guided, by finding similarities and differences from the answers and then referring them to the theory that was formed earlier. In children’s speech music was found as multi-dimensional concept. It was seen as an abstract and concrete phenomenon, or both of them at the same time. Music was also described as an activity and as something that was produced by people. The data showed especially the connection of music and digital devices and also as singing and playing instruments. From the age-distribution was noted that 6-year old children were more capable to analyse the questions.
