(2016)The purpose of this research was to study the modelling stages of leather bag patterns. The research approached the process of making leather bag patterns as explained by two pro-fessionals. The research was limited to study only the bags made out of leather, whereby the selection of the material is relevant already at the pattern modelling stage. Pattern modelling is a significant part of the making of the product. The pattern manufacturing process com-bines a number of factors and work stages. The knowledge related to modelling of bag pat-terns is personified and tacit knowledge. Of the modelling of leather bag patterns only mar-ginal written information can be found, and that is why it is essential. The research task was to gather information from professionals to create research data. This research data was the basis for separating premises, phases, and factors affecting to the bag pattern modelling. The research method followed qualitative and data-driven research method. The research data consisted of theme interviews made to two professional bag pattern modelers. The data was analyzed and classified by close reading method which formed the basis of the results of the research. The analysis of the research data indicated that both the interviewed approached pattern modelling with same methods. Based on the research results it was possible to define the working stages and starting points of pattern modelling. According to the research the model-ling of bag patterns starts at the bag’s front part and continues to the modelling of the side and bottom parts of the bag. Based on the data classification different factors affecting the pattern modelling were found. These factors were separated to direct and indirect factors depending on their effect on pattern modelling. The research proves that the modelling of leather bag patterns requires long-term professional dedication. The research also indicates that the modelling of leather bag patterns is a complex and spirally actualized process, but no straight conclusion on the topic can be drawn on the basis of this research.
