The aim of this research was to find out, what are the most unforgettable memories that people have from day care. The memories were examined with the help of the law of early childhood education and other directional documents, and through the categories of interaction, play and guided activities, or basic care. Another aim was to find out, whether the most unforgettable memory was positive or negative. There has been previous research about memories from grade school, however a similar research about memories in day care hasn’t been done. The research was conducted as a survey. 60 people, who have been in day care in Finland from 1950s to 2000s, answered a web questionnaire. The data was collected in January and February in 2017 through a link shared on the social media, and on the 27th of January in 2017 at the Educa Fair, where visitors answered the questionnaire on a tablet. The research participants were asked to describe a memory they remember best from their time spent in day care. Also the research participants were asked, how do they feel about the memory described, and how old were they at the time. The data was analyzed through qualitative content analysis. The results show that the most unforgettable memories from day care dealt with relationships, play and other activities, or basic care. The memories concerning relationships at the day care were about interaction between friends, early childhood educators or other staff at the day care centre. The memories about play and other activities had to do with memories about playing at the day care centre or nearby and activities such as celebrating birthday parties and spending time outdoors. The memories concerning basic care were about rest and eating. All these three categories included both positive and negative memories. The memories concerning relationships, play and other activities were mostly positive, whereas memories about basic care were mainly negative.
