Instruction preparing for basic education is needed increasingly in Finland. According to the functional view of language learning and sociocultural theories, communication and participation in community have central role in instruction preparing for basic education, for second language learning as well as for the acculturation. In this study it was examined, how the pupil’s participation in classroom community developed during the instruction preparing for basic education. In this study, factors affecting the development of participation were summarized. The previous scientific information directly on the subject of this study is scarce. The aim of the study is to counter the increasing need for the information to organize the instruction preparing for basic education, to gain understanding of the individual as a member of a group in instruction preparing for basic education, and to raise new questions, which should be studied in the future. In the study, pupil’s participation in a group of instruction preparing for basic education was examined by performing a descriptive review of the literature. Review of the literature was based on central, high-quality and original papers of the area of research. Information significant for the research problem was searched from the literature, and organized as wholes based on the content. The review concluded and summarized central results and theories and combined and compared information and points of view provided by different sources. Development of individual’s participation in community seemed to follow a particular pattern. Participation and its development was affected by individual’s native language and individual’s skill level at that language, phonological skills, interaction skills, motivation and personality traits, and culture of performance in community and community’s linguistic support and opportunities for communication. Special aspects of multilingualism appeared both in individual’s learning and communication in community. Development of individual’s participation in instruction preparing for basic education can be seen to move from systematically peripheral and quiet participation towards constructional and full participation. Several factors make this development individual for each pupil.

Number of immigrants are continuously increasing both in Finland and in Sweden. Among the immigrants there are many children of comprehensive school age. Therefore, it is important to study how encountering and educating of newly arrived students is arranged. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the research that has been done in years 2012–2017 about newly arrived students and their education in preparatory classes, and to present themes that have emerged from research. The aim was to present a structured totality of previous research on this subject. This study was carried out as a literature review. I answered my research questions by reading previously in Finland and in Sweden made studies about preparatory class. I presented and analyzed the results of previous studies and I summarized results in four different themes: newly arrived student’s integration in school system, learning a new language, collaboration between home and school and teacher’s opinions about their work. I described the key results of studies through these themes. The importance of integrating preparatory classes student in to the mainstream education emerged from many studies. Integration is carried about by arranging part or entire of the pupil’s education in the mainstream education. According to research results, language was the most important thing in integrating in to the society. Apart from teachers, students also learn language in interaction with other students. Collaborating with home and school was found to be an important factor in integration of the student and the whole family. Although collaborating may sometimes be very challenging. Teachers working in preparatory classes described their job as rewarding. They liked about the freedom that came with the job and they also liked about possibilities of using their creativity. According to teachers, lack of resources and lack of teaching materials were the worst part of their job.
