Augmented reality and immersive virtual reality are both rising technologies. Their potential educational usage has been acknowledged over the last decade. This research is a literature review that aims at finding out how the augmented reality and virtual reality have been used in school education. In addition, I studied the benefits and limitations of augmented and virtual realities educational use. The research questions are as follows: How augmented reality and virtual reality have been used in school education? What are the benefits and limitations of using augmented reality and virtual reality in school education based on earlier studies? The research material was selected from a diverse set of sources. I used domestic studies, international studies and other related literature to find answers to these research problems. This is a rather new phenomenon, which means that research data is still relatively limited. Based on this literature review, it can be stated that both technologies have been utilized in teaching of different subjects. Based on the literature and the research I have found, augmented reality and virtual reality are most used in the teaching of natural sciences. Benefits of the use were, among other things, its ability to motivate students, the ability to create immediate sensation of actually missing objects and locations and the ability to visualize phenomena that are abstract or difficult to perceive. The use of augmented reality and virtual reality can be limited by the various resource problems and cybersickness caused by virtual reality.
