The objective of this research was to examine attitudes of teachers towards differentation. Especially differentitation of teaching in physical education. The research emphasized the consideration of skillful students and the ways of differentiating them in teaching. The interviewees were divided in two groups, teachers with athletic background and teachers without athletic background. The research examines whether the ways of differentiation varied or not, considering the backghround of the teacher. Six elementary school teachers participated in this research. Three of them had personal athletic background and additional education in sports. The remaining three had did not have any athletic background. The material gathering methods were half structural and was performed either at schools or homes of the interviewees. The research material was transcribed and after this the material was categorized and analyzed utilising different themes. Three themes arose from the material, which were the attitudes of the teachers towards differentitation,, situations where differentitation was considered necessary and the role of a skillful student during the physical education lesson. As a result, the teachers had a positive attitude towards differentitation. The teachers with athletic background held differentitation more important than the teachers without athletic background. Differentitation was considered necessary when a skillful student was not given a task that was challenging enough. The teachers thought that it was important that each student will get tasks that are challenging enough relating to their personal level of performance. Considering the differentitation of the skillful students, the teachers with athletic backgrounds had more ways of differentitation and broader and well justified answers than the teachers without athletic performance. The skillful student was utilized as an assistant teacher or as a demonstrating student. As a conlusion, it can be stated that the athletic background and additional education in sports affects the ways of differentitaion in physical education. The teacher with athletic background differentiates more diversily and is more sensible in finding more challenging tasks for the skillful student during physical education lessons. Very little research has been made towards the upwards differentitation in physical education at elementary school. It is important to research this subject, so that teachers will get more information about the methods they are using and they can self reflect and this way give high quality teaching for the skillful students.
