This Bachelor's Thesis examines how gender´s emotional expressions are presented in the Risto Räppääjä book series. The aim was to study the differences and similarities between genders in the forms of emotional expression and of the emotional scale. In addition, the purpose was to examine how the Risto Räppääjä book series respond to the requirements of a standardized early childhood education plan for gender sensitive education. The research was conducted as a qualitative study using inductive content analysis. The study also used quantitative methods to support qualitative research. Three Risto Räppääjä books were selected for the study, all of them with the same illustrators. Books have been published between 1997 and 2011. The book was selected as the first, sixth and eleventh book of the series, which is the last book of the same illustrators. The purpose of the time interval was to allow the identification of possible changes in the description of genders emotional expression. The research showed that in the books, the girl figure´s emotional scale was smaller than the boys'. The female characters, on the other hand, had a wider sense of the emotional scale than male. The female characters expressed their feelings more strongly than boys and men. Thus, the Risto Räppääjä series does not fully meet the requirements of the standard of early childhood education plans for gender sensitive education, but its characters support stereotypical perceptions of gender emotional expression.
