Teaching is a highly emotional and stressful job due to the extensive roles that teachers play. A crucial part of the students' learning at school is the teacher. The teacher's competences, knowledge and skills. Studies show that people-oriented professions such as the teaching profession have a high risk of exhaustion and a high turnover intention. Teachers are reported to have a heavy workload and are continuously under time pressure. In addition, other factors such as challenging students, complicated school relationships, demanding parental attitudes and role conflicts also affect teacher performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the importance of emotional intelligence in the teaching profession. As a method, a systematic literature study has been carried out of previous research in the field. The literature highlights the role of emotional demands on teachers. The emotional well-being of teachers is said to be at stake because they often experience negative emotions and high emotional demands at work. Unfortunately, these factors are considered to be among the biggest work-related risks for teachers' health and well-being, which also affects classrooms and teaching. Previous research in the field has shown significant results that teachers were able to overcome these earlier mentioned challenges by developing their professional competencies and by developing their and their students' emotional competencies. In education, researchers have investigated the role of emotions and emotional intelligence (EI) in benefiting teacher and student performance. Studies show that EI is a skill that can help an individual recognize and manage their own emotions and those of others and foster good relationships with people. Therefore, several studies emphasize EI as one of the most important personal competencies of teachers and the individual in general. Suggestions for continued research would be to carry out a longitudinal study on what difference emotional intelligence training/education could have on the individual (the teacher) and their profession.
