It can be challenging to combine studies and purposive sports training for a young athlete. However, education facilitates the transition to working life after the sports career. The ob-jective of this study was to explain, how purposive sports training can be combined with dif-ferent levels of education in Finland. The objective was also to observe the importance of training and talent in the development of elite athletes. This research was done as literature review. The source literature was research and litera-ture from sports, training, talent and motivation. This study also observed the research of combining a sports career and studying. Earlier studies pointed out that development of elite athletes requires physical talent and hard work, as well as versatile and high-quality training. Learning skills take place as a result of practice, so that the teaching occasion had a key role in the development of the athlete. Mo-tivation to practice was seen as the most important factor in changing potential into real abil-ity. Young athletes benefit from physical education at school, even if the sport of the athlete is not practiced during lessons. The objectives of physical education to develop students’ physical activity and fundamental motor skills also support the development of the athlete. According to previous research, children in elementary school need to move a lot, but spe-cial arrangements of combining sports and studying are not required while still in elementary school. Combining upper secondary education and a sports career worked out well in Fin-land. On the contrary, purposive sports training was difficult to combine with studies in the higher education institution. Athletes need support for combining a sports career and studies, especially after completing studies at the upper secondary level. In recent years sport acad-emies have assisted and provided possibilities for athletes to study during their sport career. The development of sport academies is important, so as to enable an increasing number of athletes to achieve success in both fields of sport and studies in the future.
