The aim of this literature review is to analyse whether recent research supports the hypothesis about subliminal affective priming, more specifically whether backward masked emotional face stimuli processed outside of visual awareness can influence processing of subsequent target stimuli. Subliminal affective priming is a frequently researched phenomenon, but the topic has remained highly controversial due to theoretical and methodological challenges. Subliminality can be defined in different ways and the methods for controlling it vary. Out of the ten studies included in this review, subliminal affective priming effects were observed in six studies, but in two of these studies priming effects where reversed showing an inhibitory influence on the processing of subsequent target stimuli. This reversed effect could be explained by different instructions given to participants. In four out of ten studies subliminal affective priming effects were not observed. This lack of significant priming effects could be explained by limited power of analysis, different methods for controlling subliminality or participants being aware of the structure of the trials.
