The aim of this review is to create an understanding of the state of meditation research and the differences between different meditation techniques by examining the techniques themselves. Although research on mindfulness has grown exponentially, other meditation techniques have received little attention. Consequently, there is currently no consensus on how to classify these techniques or what meditation is, nor is there a unifying theory of meditation. One way to approach the topic is to examine the differences between the more studied meditation techniques. These techniques include mindfulness meditation, focused attention meditation, and loving-kindness meditation. In mindfulness, attention is kept from focusing on any single stimulus, with the purpose of noticing as much as possible. In focused attention meditation one maintains focus on a single stimulus and returns to it when attention wanders. In loving-kindness meditation, love and compassion are cultivated towards oneself, loved ones, and eventually all people. The differences in the effects of these techniques can be observed in attention, brain activation, heart rate, creativity, and phenomenology.
