Tiivistelmä – Referat – Abstract Rumination has been suggested to be a mechanism behind mental disorders such as depression and anxiety disorders. Since rumination has been shown to cause and sustain, for example, depressive symptoms, and interventions have been shown to affect rumination, new psychosocial treatments have been developed and researched with the goal of affecting psychopathology through targeting rumination. The purpose of this review is to assess if rumination-focused treatment is useful in treating depression and anxiety disorders, and how these treatments compare to other treatments. The research material of this review consists of randomized and controlled trials, in which the intervention is explicitly targeted at rumination. Based on the studies evaluated in this review, rumination-focused treatments show promising results. These treatments, however, were partly based on treatments already proven effective. On the other hand, cautious evidence was found that targeting rumination could provide additional benefit when combined with other treatment. More research is needed to determine whether the reduction of rumination mediates treatment effects, and how rumination-focused treatments compare to other interventions.
