General defence will has been a key concept in studying the Finnish public opinion towards military defence since the times after Second World War. Attitudes towards necessity of use of military force in a situation, where the Finnish sovereignty is at risk, have traditionally been portrayed against the latest time when Finland participated in war time action, which is the time spectrum of the Second World War, 1939–1945. However, for a deeper understanding of defence will as a concept, a more thorough examination of historical elements is necessary. This thesis presents key concepts in defence will studies, analyses defence will as a sociological phenomenon and the change in it over time. In addition, a qualitative study among participants in voluntary military training is presented and compared to the Finnish public’s attitudes in general. Finally, an analysis of possible future scenarios for the Finnish defence will and options for future study fields are presented.
