This thesis investigates how swear words are translated from English to Finnish in the first season of the Netflix series "Derry Girls." It focuses on the different strategies used to adapt the often sensitive and culturally specific content of profanity for Finnish audiences. The study examines two main aspects: the categorization of swear words according to a linguistic framework and the specific translation strategies employed. The theoretical framework for this thesis is based on a model proposed by McEnery et al. (2000), which categorizes swear words based on their function.The findings of this thesis show how swear words in "Derry Girls" were translated from English to Finnish, primarily using omission and literal translation. The most common categories were religious oaths and persona insults. Omission was commonly used for religious oaths and general expletives, indicating a cautious approach to sensitive material. In contrast, literal translation was frequently used for personal insults in order to maintain the impact and authenticity of character interactions. I believe that this study adds to the field of translation studies by shedding light on the difficulties that translators face when adapting swear words in subtitles. It also emphasizes the importance of providing more detailed guidelines to translators when dealing with culturally loaded language. Future research could compare the translation of swear words in different television series and films across various languages. This would help identify common patterns and unique strategies that may be language or culture specific.
