This study will focus on news about the higher education reform that was conducted by Sipilä’s government (2015-2019), and their relations to the changes and reforms of educational politics. In theory part, I will discuss about the trends of educational politics and their relations to employability and neoliberalism. Studies have shown that Finnish education politics has adopted policy of competitivity, heading towards individualistic, evaluative and number-based policy. In my study I will answer two research question: What kind of arguments are represented for enhancing and objecting the higher education reform in media? Are there any paradoxes standing out in the higher education reform news? My study consisted of 53 the higher education reform news from Helsingin Sanomat and YLE, published between 2015-2019. I approached the news with a discursive practice, following Foucault’s ideology of power, seeing discourses as practices rather than speech. My aim was to point out what was possible to say or do in the created media discourse and find out what kind of discursive practice the news created. This study was also discussing the different subject positions given to the youth by the media in regard to this reform. Analysis showed that competitivity was established as a natural part of educational politics in media. The universities autonomy was seen as threatened when the government controls the universities with funding. The youth talked about their increased mental health problems while the individualistic responsibility increased. Education was described as free-will -based path with countless opportunities, but on the other hand people were governed to the same path. Media seemed to create the picture of the ideal consumer citizen: efficient, responsible, self-governed, young high school boy. Education was seen as a responsibility that youth should aim towards in order to maximise their own value. Media’s discursive practice emphasized the freedom and rights, still governing the youth to the path that was seen as ‘the right choice’. The results are in line with the previous research on marketized education and individualistic responsibility.

Aims. The purpose of this follow-up study (Pesonen, Itkonen, Nislin, 2017) was to analyse how autism-spectrum disorder is represented in leading newspapers in Finland. The disorder is frequently perceived in rather negative light in media. Medical approach focusing on symptoms, diagnosis and treatment has been prevailing. The goals of this study were on one hand to broaden, on the other hand to deepen examination of the phenomenon focusing on representation of autism-spectrum in mass media. The study examines what perceptions of the disorder, education and learning are highligted in newspapers and how educational legislative reforms and development projects are represented in news regarding autism-spectrum disorder. Theoretical framework is based on inclusive education, social model of disability and medicalisation. Methods. The research material consisted of the three leading newspapers’ digital articles on the disorder found with the search word ”autism” during the period 1995─2017. Altogether 456 articles were identified; out of which 109 pieces were included into the education and learning category establishing the core research material. The research period was initiated prior to the Basic Education Law 628/1998 when all students regardless of the forms of support were transferred to mainstream education. The research methods were content analysis and framing analysis frequently applied in media studies. Results and Conclusions. In the research analysis news articles were placed in thematic categories that were teaching arrangements, learning, societal structures, working life, rehabilitation and accessibility. Majority of the articles focused on rehabilitation and teaching arrangements and minority on accessibility. Across the data focus was on medical aspects instead of inclusive or social model of disability. Articles did not report to a large degree on educational law reforms or special education development projects.

Tiivistelmä - Referat – Abstract Aims. In the everyday dining of families with children, challenges can be caused by, among other things, the rush and different rhythms of everyday life of family members, skills of the parents to control everyday life, and the different preferences and habits of family members. Family dining and cooking are of much greater importance to family life than just fulfilling a need for nutrition. Media and TV programs are one source of instruction and advice on how to live and what would be appropriate to eat. The purpose of this study was to find out what kind of challenges a popular reality TV program presents in execution of everyday dining and what kind of advice the program offers to solve those. The theoretical background of the study is based on research examining the importance of family meals and the contradictions of food choice, as well as nutritional recommendations and guides that provide recommendations and guidance. Methods. The subject of the study was thirteen episodes of the TV program Kitchen takeover that included families with children, presented in the years 2018–2019. The research approach was qualitative. The data were collected in the summer of 2019 by watching and spelling out all the episodes of the program that were related to the subject of the study. Content analysis was chosen as the method of data analysis. The analysis was done on a material-themed basis. Results and conclusions. Based on the research results, the challenges of families concerning everyday eating are diverse. Recurring themes were cooking discomfort and friction, who has the responsibility of cooking, the low variety of foods, low use of vegetables, food restrictions and everyday management challenges. The program suggests that the implementation of everyday meals for families would be improved by eating together, making together, planning and scheduling, increasing the use of vegetables, and seasoning. Based on what was presented in the program, the families managed to achieve positive changes in their daily dining. Based on the research results, there are families with children in Finland who would need practical support for their cooking.
