Anemia is the most common extraintestinal complication of inflammatory bowel disease and usual per oral iron treatment might not be sufficient enough. The main objective of our study was to determinate the effectiveness of intravenous iron treatment with ferric carboxymaltose. Our other objectives were to find out if there were any parameters that would predict a good response to the treatment and to chart out possible side-effects of the treatment. In our study we used data collected from medical records of IBD patients who were treated with ferric carboxymaltose in Meilahti Triangle hospital between 2014 and 2016. The collected data included laboratory test results and general patient information related to IBD. According to our study, intravenous iron treatment with ferric carboxymaltose is effective in patients with anemia and IBD and the side-effects that occured in our study were all in all quite rare and mild. The results of our study further strengthens the current knowledge of the effectiveness and safety of the treatment used in Meilahti Triangle hospital.
