Introduction: Nurse practitioners handles over one third of Jorvi Hospital's health-care center's patients in emergency aid department. Independently, it takes care of approximately 2800 patients and with doctor consultancy approximately 5500 patients annually. The aim of this study is to clarify if nurses with current education can run receptions in the emergency aid department efficiently and mainly independently, how this practice could be improved and is the triage directing suitable patients to nurses. Methodology: The research material was collected in Jorvi Hospital's Emergency Aid Department with three questionnaires during 2015-2016. Additionally, patient information data regarding 668 patient visits to Jorvi Hospital during 2015 were utilized. Results & conclusions: According to the study, the patients directed to nurse practitioners in emergency aid department are mainly young and healthy patients, whose symptoms do not require heavy laboratory assessments. In questionnaires, personnel mentioned issues with triage and to underline that point, over 10% of nurse practitioners patients are eventually redirected to a doctor's reception. With nearly half of NP's patients, a doctor is consulted. Thus the number of patients managed by nurses independently was fewer than expected and it seems that the existing education is not sufficient for them to run the receptions independently. One improvement would be a more sophisticated triage to avoid directing too difficult patients to nurses. In questionnaires, nurses also required additional education and frequent training to improve their capability to run receptions in emergency aid department. Overall, waiting time for patient has decreased, but it is still falling short of the national target. Personnel sees the nurse practitioners as a positive addition to the hospital's emergency department and feels that it has decreased the workload from doctors.
