This master’s thesis will examine a piece of recent Hindi literature, Geet Chaturvedi’s novella “Gomūtr”, through the theoretical framework of metamodernism. The metamodern characteristics argued for in the first part of the analysis have to do with issues of truth, belief and ontology. It will be argued that the novella makes a demand for the appreciation of affective and personal truth regardless of an event’s ontological status or absolute truth value. Intertextuality is looked at as a sign of human interconnectedness instead of an obstacle to making judgements on authenticity. The second part will analyze the concept of advait (‘non-dualism’) as a central metamodern, and specifically South Asian, motive; it encompasses a discussion within the story on problems in a society concerning the distribution of knowledge and power on the one hand, and intersubjectivity on the other.
